Modularity Creates Sustainable Wealth

It feels like a trivial thought: Modularity that is designed forreusability and versatile conversion. creates wealth!

A child who has clamping modules (such as Lego’s or Cobi’s or XinBao’s) thus has millions of toys at the same time. Much of what one can imagine can be produced and used directly. If you are willing to accept the aesthetics.

I am a designer, artist and sustainability activist. I love to put time into things that I find interesting and important. But the things that interest me and I think are important aren’t the things you can easily get money for. I do it anyway and money is often tight.

But we live in a modular home and have pre-use hacking skills. And from this we create wealth for us that can otherwise only be achieved with a lot of money. What we need or want to have right now, we often plug, clamp or screw together quickly from what we already have.

Here are some examples:

For our son we have built dismountable mobiles from parts which he can later use as toys and which we also use in other experiments and contexts.

Our wardrobe and one of our desks are made up of parts that we have already used for an exhibition, for example.

Our cutlery drawer insert consists of compostable disposable plates, which can also be used in many other ways in a variety of practical ways.

We have a number of very nice modular lamps at home. They are constantly evolving, adapted and becoming more and more beautiful.

These are just four examples out of many many many. We have a nice home. Many of our visitors keep telling us that. A playground, among other things.

We are of course equipped with a series of connectors and fasteners and other basic components. With this our home turned into a kind of Lego construction kit. The connectors and fasteners are in comparison a rather small investment.

Modularity creates wealth! With a low resource input.

Tivial. At least some day maybe.

And of course most of it is also circular. Not only at the level of reusability, but mostly even at the level of materials. Circularity, if well designed, should also increase our prosperity.
